Mining For Electricity

Though largely confined to southwestern Pennsylvania, the coal industry remains an economic powerhouse in the state. A recent study by the Pennsylvania Economy League attributed more than 41,500 jobs to coal, with the industry's 535 mines and refuse sites producing more than 76 million tons a year, making the state the fourth-largest producer in the nation. Coal is also responsible for more than 54 percent of the state's electricity generation.
